Graf-Friedrich-Schule is located in Diepolz, Germany. It has approximately 70 teachers, and 1100 students from grade 5 to 12. The school has recently undergone significant rennovation, producing new learning spaces such as the striking library / media centre.
Germany has a three tier school system, where students are separated in terms of skills and ability. Regardless of the type of school attended, students must complete at least 9 years of education. The main schooling options are:
Hauptschule: a less academic school which heads towards vocational education and apprenticeships.
Realschule: leads towards attendance at vocational or business schools. It is, however, possible for high achieving students to transfer to a Gymnazium upon graduation.
Gymnazium: academically orientated, culminating in awarding the Abitur certificate which can lead on to a university education.
Gesamtschule: a recent development, only offered in some states. It replaces the Hauptschule and Realschule options, with students achieving either certificate depending on whether they complete schooling to grade 9 (Hauptschule certificate) or 10 (Realschule certificate).
The emergence of the Gesamtschule is part of wider changes in the German school system, which is seeing a move towards more outcomes based eduation, and having other schools apart from the Gymnazium able to offer the Abitur which leads to university.
